DID YOU KNOW?

In 1965, India became the first nation to establish specific legal protections for cows, though this was based on religious rather than ethical considerations. Today, India’s constitution includes a duty to show compassion to all living beings. India’s constitution is unique in including Article 51A(g), which makes it a fundamental duty of citizens to “protect and improve the natural environment… and to have compassion for living creatures.” This was added in 1976 through the 42nd Amendment, making India one of the first nations to constitutionally recognize compassion for animals as a civic duty. However, the implementation and interpretation of this duty has been inconsistent, and many forms of animal exploitation remain legal in India.
